Interview with Paden Pikey
Everyone welcome 22 year old upcoming artist Paden Pikey. A new artist coming out of Bloomington, Indiana with biggest song being “Slept on Me”.
How long have you been making music?
“I’ve been interested in music since late 2016, started recording in late 2019 and released my first song in 2020.”
What got you into making music?
“I dropped a freestyle on Twitter my freshman year of college and it got a little bit of clout. After that I used to goof around and write a few bars.. I just vibed with instrumentals. I even tried to make beats and record, my sophomore year, but I lacked the funds and knowledge to pursue what I was trying to do. About a year later, a friend gave me the courage to pursue music. He said I had a better singing voice than I gave myself credit for. After that, I took a singing class through Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. That helped me learn so much and become truly confident in my abilities.Through trial and error, I finally made some connections and started recording. I do music because I love creating. I love relating what you and I feel, through melodic rap. I also believe in being real. My music is real, honest, and bumps.”
What was it like writing “Slept on Me”?
“Slept on Me came very naturally. I was just free-styling to the beat in my car and the hook came. I could just tell it would be a bop after I perfected the hook. Probably the easiest song I’ve ever written because I was feeling it.”
Did any artist influence your style? If so who?
“ I really like Lil Skies because his flows aren’t too difficult, but they’re melodic and catchy when paired with the right beat. I’d like to think my future music will have similarities. I sound nothing like J. Cole, but he inspired my to be real in my music. This is a tough question because hella artists inspire me in significant and little ways. Honorable mentions would be Jack Harlow, SAINt JHN, Roy Woods, The Weeknd, Blackbear, Juicy J, and many more.”
What are your goals for 2020?
“Music started off as a hobby towards the end of my senior year of college. I’m still very new to the game, but now I’m pretty invested. Obsessed, damn near. In 2020, my debut year, I want to organically grow a following on my socials and streaming platforms. I want to release a 4–6 song EP, perform shows, reach 100,000 total streams by the end of the year, etc… Talk is cheap and it won’t come easy, but I’m up for the challenge. The better question is, will they sleep on me?”
