Everyone give a warm welcome to WHOSLORD. A 23 year older from Rochester, NY artist who’s been making a name for his self with his latest release.

Where’d you get the name WHOSLORD?

“Yo it took more than i ever thought it was suppose to picking a name. I chose that cuz i don’t know what god looks like lol. Nobody knows what god looks like or should be like. I was a Christian coverted over to Islam to try and get right with god and when i stopped being a Muslim looked for god in other places. So it mainly comes from that. My last name coulda came off as offensive but i wasn’t worried about that until my brother even said he wouldn’t listen to me if i dint change my name.”

How was it like growing up in Rochester NY?

“It wasn’t bad from where i could see. As i was getting older growing up there i noticed more and more crazy shit that would happen around us and me and i just got use to everything that came with living there. I never really thought i came from a bad neighborhood but my family always said different. I left young so i only got to see and do so much. I had a good friend that use to live next door. I loved him and his sister to death. It’s crazy, i moved to the south an did lest outside shit than i did in the city. But i loved the snow up there. It was my favorite part about being there. I got my autism diagnoses from the kid psychiatrist up there and that kinda made school weird for me because of how the teachers treated me. It wasn’t bad just different. I love the city locked food they have up there. Theirs food that you only get up there that i loved. NY is famous for the “chopped cheese” burger subs up there and their really fucking good. Another favorite about being up there. But the city was dying when i left it and i hear crazy ass stories from there still. Me and my little brother and mother almost got shot at up there. Like, drama wise, that’s one of the biggest things that stands out to me negatively from there that i personally experienced. Only cuz of how close we came to being in the area. We where going for a walk and two dudes on motorcycles passed us going towards our house. I had asked my moms why they wear masks and she told me it was to keep bugs out their face. Turns out it was so they wouldn’t be identified. they hit the wrong house. They hit my friends grandfathers house instead. Came back later that night and got the right house but didn’t hit anyone. My mom was historical. But the good times up there are as unforgettable as all that extra shit. I had a crush on my cross the street neighbor. They owned an orphanage type house that the kids would change every few months/years and there was this girl that was there for a while that was like twice my age and we use to play in the winters a lot. Loved her to death. And to keep from gettin to talkative, i had one more friend i liked hanging out with. Our moms where high school friends and hung out a lot so they would leave us alone all the time. Either at their house or this store they owned. We had a pretty big crush on each other. She was like a year older than me. I remember one time, Harry Potter had just came out and our moms had left us alone again, me, her, her sister and baby brother, and we where all watching the movie together on vhs i think, she got her sister and brother to leave the room half way through the movie and got us all alone. I was EXTRA green to this kinda shit we where mad young, but she got them out the room so she could throw a few kisses on me. Blew my mind at the time. I had never kissed a girl befor. She used a lil toung and i thought that shit was gross as HELL. But I’ll never forget that shit. It was wild cuz after that i learned way more about that shit from her so it kinda started me out liking girls at a young age. We don’t talk anymore because our moms started beefing but i still got a sweet spot for her. Rochester was interesting. Family kinda astranged up that way but you never know what can change.”

What made you want to pursue music?

“At first i dint give a fuck about making fr fr. I just liked listening. I was hip hop heavy in Rochester then when i got to Atlanta i was all about alt rock and indie music. I had a friend who got me into it heavy and showed me guitar hero for the first time and that was it. We got this life long thing like, every time we see each other we gotta kick each other’s asses in rock band or guitar hero and ima tell you now, HES TRASH HALEY, MUCHO GARBAGE.

But that made me want to start playing guitar so i dove head first into that. I did trumpet in elementary school but it was expensive and my parents dint know if I’d stick with it. But when i got the guitar, i got my broke ass on YouTube and learned how to play that bitch. I love my guitars to death. But that lead me to meeting another really good friend and we took it to the next level and started learning how to produce and record and all that extra shit. I got a few gigs here and there along the way thanks to some good people. And the more people i met and the more i seen i was sacrificing for it the more it took a chunk of me fr fr. I do it cuz i feel like i have to. Sometimes i fucking hate it fr. I got other obligations and Iv got kids so it can really suck trying to give it all my fire when there’s so much other shut to accomplish but, i always find myself coming back to it so…”

Did any artist influence your style? If so, who?

“At first, i was heavy influenced by like, all the alt rock and hard rock and indie bands. Bloc party was a heavy influence, Green Day, all time low, oberhofer, motion city soundtrack and HEAVY SYSTEM IF A DOWN and Howard Jones from killswitch engage. Then i started getting back into hip hop and discovered kid Cudi and lupe fiasco. A few others. Ilovemakonnen was big for me to buy a sour twitter conversation killed that for me a bit. And i heard xxxtentacion some months later and fell for him and juices music. But my biggest hero when it comes down to it all are Howard, System of a Down, kid Cudi and cab Calloway. I keep them in mind with slot of things i make”

What was it like writing your latest release?

“Just messy and a bit frustrating. I had to make a lot of those songs over the course of like 2 years because of my living situations but i feel them all. Every track i feel like i did myself a favor by making sure i finished or even started recording them. There was always so much going on when i tried to record. Either a baby was on the way or my car got wrecked or i get stuck in some mess. But it was a challenge. I love the product but i hope my future projects can be less painful. But I’m not holding my breath. The xxxtentacion homage and “over tonight” are the songs i care about the most though. They cane from a tender ass place.”

What are your goals for 2020?

“Stay alive and healthy lol. Fr fr just do more shows. I wanna connect with more people. But the virus might spoil my plans but if that’s the case, Iv always got a backup plan. I’m ready for 2021 to be honest. But this year already teaching me a lot.”
